Frequently Asked Questions
Kaleidoscope Geckos specializes in Crested, Gargoyle, and Chahoua geckos. Available geckos are individually listed with photos and available details to help you learn more about each animal and find the right addition to your home or reptile collection.
Crested geckos are often considered an excellent choice for first-time reptile keepers because of their manageable care requirements and generally easygoing nature. Gargoyle geckos can also make rewarding pets for newer keepers who have researched their needs. Chahoua geckos share many similar care requirements but are larger and may be better suited to someone prepared for their additional space and care needs.
All three are arboreal geckos with similar basic habitat needs, but they differ in size, appearance, personality, and feeding preferences. Crested geckos are popular for their distinctive crests and approachable care, Gargoyle geckos are known for striking colors and patterns, and Chahoua geckos are generally larger and more robust. Kaleidoscope Geckos is happy to help you decide which species may be the best fit for you.
With proper care, Crested, Gargoyle, and Chahoua geckos commonly live 15 to 20 years or longer. Bringing home a gecko is a long-term commitment, so prospective owners should be prepared to provide an appropriate habitat, nutrition, and care throughout the gecko's life.
Crested, Gargoyle, and Chahoua geckos are arboreal, meaning they spend much of their time climbing. A secure vertical enclosure with branches, vines, plants, hiding places, and elevated resting areas helps encourage natural behaviors. Chahoua geckos are generally larger and more robust, so adults often benefit from additional enclosure and climbing space.
These geckos thrive in moderate temperatures with a natural daily humidity cycle. Kaleidoscope Geckos recommends comfortable daytime temperatures in the low to mid 70s with a slight nighttime drop. Humidity should rise after misting and gradually decrease before the next misting cycle. Because excessive heat can be dangerous, always monitor the enclosure with accurate digital thermometers and hygrometers.
A high-quality complete gecko diet should form the foundation of your gecko's nutrition, with fresh water always available. Appropriately sized insects can also provide enrichment and additional protein. Crested geckos generally thrive on a complete gecko diet with occasional insects, while Gargoyle and Chahoua geckos may appreciate insects more frequently as part of a varied diet.
Feeding frequency depends on your gecko's species, age, size, and appetite. Juvenile geckos generally require more frequent meals, while most adults are fed several times per week. Monitor your gecko's body condition and eating habits and adjust its feeding routine as needed.
Many keepers choose to provide low-level UVB lighting as part of a well-rounded gecko habitat. Appropriate lighting can also help establish a consistent day-and-night cycle. Lighting, supplementation, temperature, and diet should be considered together when creating your gecko's overall care routine.
In most situations, keeping geckos in separate enclosures is the safest option and helps reduce stress, competition, accidental breeding, and potential injuries. Housing recommendations can vary depending on species, sex, and individual temperament, but separate habitats allow each gecko's health, feeding, and behavior to be monitored more closely.
Give your new gecko time to settle into its enclosure before beginning regular handling. Moving to a new home can be stressful, so allowing your gecko to become comfortable with its surroundings first can make future interactions easier. When you begin handling, keep sessions short and gentle, allow the gecko to step onto your hand rather than grabbing it from above, and gradually build trust.
Some geckos naturally change the intensity of their coloration and patterns. A gecko that is "fired up" may appear darker, brighter, or more intensely patterned, while a "fired down" gecko may look lighter or more muted. Color can also vary with age, lighting, environment, stress, time of day, and shedding cycles, so your gecko may not always look exactly the same as it does in its listing photos.
Tail dropping is a natural defense response that can occasionally happen when a gecko becomes frightened or stressed, including during transportation. A tail drop does not necessarily mean a gecko is unhealthy. Because it can occur despite careful handling and shipping practices, Kaleidoscope Geckos does not guarantee tail condition during shipment or after delivery.
Determining a gecko's sex can be difficult when the animal is young, which is why some available geckos may be listed as unsexed, probable, possible, or pore-sexed. Kaleidoscope Geckos guarantees the sex of any gecko specifically listed and sold as a confirmed male or female, but animals whose sex has not been definitively confirmed are not guaranteed to be a particular sex.

Yes. Live-animal shipping is commonly used by reptile breeders, but safe shipping depends on proper packaging, appropriate weather, and careful scheduling. Kaleidoscope Geckos reviews conditions before shipment and may postpone shipping or require pickup at an approved carrier location when necessary to protect the gecko.
Live geckos are shipped Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday for arrival the following day. Shipping is weather dependent, with overnight temperatures required to be at least 30°F and daytime highs below 90°F. Kaleidoscope Geckos reserves the right to postpone shipping whenever weather, carrier conditions, holidays, or other circumstances could place a gecko at unnecessary risk.
Your gecko will remain safely in the care of Kaleidoscope Geckos until an appropriate shipping window becomes available. There is no penalty for a weather-related shipping delay. Depending on temperatures and your location, pickup at an approved carrier location may also be required instead of residential delivery.
Yes. Kaleidoscope Geckos guarantees live arrival when all required shipping procedures have been followed. If a gecko arrives deceased, Kaleidoscope Geckos must be contacted within one hour of delivery or pickup and photographic or video documentation will be required.
Local pickup may be available by prior arrangement. Contact Kaleidoscope Geckos before purchasing if you would like to discuss local pickup options. Depending on weather and shipping conditions, pickup from an approved carrier location may also be recommended or required for shipped geckos.
